11. The False Husband:

Sung by Flora Benamor, Tetuán, 1956.

The groom's mother complains of her future daughter-in-law's laziness. She also has doubts about her virtue and decides to test it by sending a page to seduce her. She refuses his advances, and curses him and her mother-in-law for trying to ruin her reputation. The page admits his mistress' complicity but implies that it served a legitimate purpose.

"Arise, my daughter-in-law
My graceful daughter-in-law
My graceful daughter-in-law.
Weave the ribbons
Through your chemise.

“Your close friends
Wear a woven one
Wear a woven one.
And you, my daughter-in-law,
Hide under covers and sleep."

You, my daughter-in-law
Hide under covers and sleep.
At her door, a page
Holds a lighted lantern.

“Upon my soul, page
Light my way
Oh, light my way.
I have a mother-in-law
Who shouts at me.”

“If you give me a kiss
I will light your way
I will light your way”
"Curses on you, impudent page
And the one who brought you here

“I didn’t enter through the door
Nor through the window
Nor through the window.”
“You brought this on me
You and that evil old woman.

“You brought this on me
You and that evil old woman
You and that evil old woman.”
Oh, I brought this on you
To see if you were an honorable woman.”

11.El marido disfrazado:

Sung by Flora Benamor, Tetuán, 1956.

Lévantevos, nuera,
mi nuera garrida,
mi nuera garrida.
tejéis las cintas
de vuestra camisa.

"Que vuestras iguales
la traen tejida,
la traen tejida:
y tú, la mi nuera,
tapada y dormida.”

”Tu, la mi nuera
tapada y dormida
a tu puerta, un paje,
que la lumbre tenía

“Por tu vida, el paje
dame de tu flama
ay, dame de tu flama;
que una suegra tengo,
que a voces me llama."

"Si me das un beso,
mi flama te daba,
mi flama te daba."
“Malaya tú, el paje,
y quién te ha traído,

"Ni me entró por puerta,
ni por la ventana,
ni por la ventana"
tú me le trajiste,
y la vieja mala."

"Tú me le trajiste,
y la vieja mala,
y la vieja mala.”
“Ay,yo te lo traje,
por ver si eras honrada."
