 3. Disguised As a Woman:

Sung by Sara Cadoch Israel, Tetuán, 1956.

The King offers half his reign and marriage to anyone who can tame his daughter. A young man offers to try even though death is the penalty for failure. Upon advice of his mother he is dressed in girl's clothes and goes to the palace. The king's soldier barricade the door, but he orders them tied up. He gets in bed with the princess, she cries out for help in vain, and is raped. The next day they are married.

A proclamation, proclaimed the king
A proclamation that said:

Everything to him
Who conquers Albertra Venza
I will give half my kingdom
And her hand in marriage.

He who does not conquer her,
I will cut off his head."
Then a young man volunteered
The son of a rich widow.

"I will conquer her, good king,
I'd be the one to conquer her.
I have an old mother at home,
Her advice I will heed.

"I bet a bet, mother;
A bet, it was bet:
That "He who conquers Albertra,
Would marry her;

“He would marry her,
And give him half the kingdom.
"A bad bet you have made, son,
A bad bet you have bet.

Go on, young man,
Go to your aunt's house;
She will dress you like a woman,
“Go now, young man,
Go to your sister's house;
She will dress you in her jewels
, Like one of her own daughters."

Now he goes, the young man,
No~ he goes to his aunt's house;
She will dress him like a woman,
Like one of her maidens.

Now he goes, the young man,
Now he goes to his sister's house;
She will dress him in her jewels
Like one of her maidens.

Thus at nightfall
He goes to the king's house.
By a hundred of his soldiers
The door is barricaded.

He orders them tied up,
Four by four, five by five.
Towards midnight,
The princess screams out:

"Help me, gentlemen,
Look at this amazing sight;
Instead of sleeping with a maiden,
I slept with a man."

"We cannot, my lady,
We are tied four by four;
We are tied four by four,
We are tied five by five."

The next day in the morning
The king's daughter is married to him.

3. Disfrazada de mujer:

Sung by Sara Cadoch Israel, Tetuán, 1956.

Un pregón, pregonó el rey
un pregón que así decía:

"Todo el que a la
Albertra Venza venciere
medio reino le dará
con ella se casaría.

El que no la venciere
su cabeza cortaría.
" Y ya s'aljadró un mancevito
hijo de una viúda rica.

"Yo la venceré, buen rey,
yo fuí quien la vencería,
madre vieja tengo en casa
su consejo tomaría.

"Un aposte, apostí, madre;
un aposte, apostaría:
que si a la Albertra venciere,
con ella se casaría;

“Con ella se casaría,
Medio reino le daría."
"Mal aposte has hecho, hijo,
Mal aposte apostaría."

Vaite tú, el mancevito,
vaite en casa de tu tía;
que te vista de mujer,
“Vaite ahora, mancevito,
vaite en casa de tu hermana;
qu te ponga las alhajas,
al modo de una hija suya."

Ya se iba, el mancevito,
se iba en casa de su tía;
le vistiera de mujer,
al modo de una doncella.

Ya se iba, el mancevito, ya
se iba en casa de su hermana
le pusiera las alhajas
al modo de una doncella.

Así que cayó la noche
en ca' del rey se presentara.
con los cién de sus soldados,
la puerta encerraría.

Ya le mandan a amarrar,
cuatro a cuatro, cinco a cinco.
Hacía la medianoche,
La infanta diera los gritos:

"Acudid, mis caballeros,
vereis esta maravilla;
por dormir con una doncella,
dormía con un caballero."

"No podemos, mi señora,
amarrados cuatro y cuatro;
amarrados cuatro y cuatro,
amarrados cinco a cinco."

Otro día en la mañana
la hija del rey con él se casara.
