 6. The Twenty-Five Steps:

Sung by Flora Benamor. Tetuán, 1956.

In the Bible, Jacob sees the ladder leading to heaven. Similarly, the twenty-five steps in this song symbolize the path leading to a perfect, or "heavenly" marriage. Her mission in life is to have children; his, to provide material comfort, security, and status. Thanks are given to God for his spiritual guidance, health, and prosperity.

Up twenty-five steps
Of fine silver
Climbs the bride;
A year later she gives birth.

Refrain:
And God gives us righteousness,
And He gives us worldly goods.
God gives us righteousness,
And He gives us worldly goods.
And He gives the fine bridegroom
Health and prosperity.

Up twenty-five steps
Of fine gold
Climbs the bridegroom,
To present the ring.

I thank God in heaven
And my honored father
For giving me a husband,
Of such high lineage.

Up twenty-five steps
Of fine gold
Climbs the bride;
She gives birth to a son.

6. De veinticinco escalones:

Sung by Flora Benamor. Tetuán, 1956.

Veinticinco escalones
de plata fina
por donde suba esta novia;
y al año parida.

Refrán:
Y bien nos dé el Dios,
y bien nos dé.
Bien nos dé el Dios,
y bien nos dé.
Y este lindo novio,
salud y bien.

De veinticinco escalones
de oro fino
por donde suba este novio,
y a dar el anillo.

Y agradezco a Dios del cielo
y a mi señor padre
que tal marido me he dado,
de alto linaje.

De veinticinco escalones
de oro fino
por donde suba esta novia;
parida de un niño.
