 3. The Beauty at Mass:

Sung by Sara Cadoch Israel, Tetuán, 1956.

The most radiant woman at mass is the sumptuously-dressed Isabel. She casts a spell over all the men who see her. The lamplighter scorches his face, and the guitar player, so it is said, falls dead on the floor. But Isabel takes him home to her palace, and although the ballad does not say so, she probably revived him.

Morning, it was morning,
The morning prayer service,
When ladies and gentlemen
Were going to the sermon.

Among those who were there,
Isabel was the most radiant;
She wore stockings of silk
and patent-leather shoes.

And her sweet face glowed
With delicate color,
And on her head
She were a floppy hat

At the start of the mass,
Everyone gasped;
The lamplighter
Scorched his own face,

And the guitar player
Fell dead on the floor.
She lifted him in her beautiful arms,
And took him to her palace.

3. La bella en misa:

Sung by Sara Cadoch Israel, Tetuán, 1956.

Mañanita era, mañana,
mañanita de oración,
cuando damas y galanes
iban a la almiración.

Y entre todas las que iban,
Isabel es la mejor;
lleva sus media de seda
y zapatitos de charól.

Y en su carita llevaba
un poquito de color,
y en su cabeza llevaba
un sobrero volador.

Y a la entrada de la misa,
toda la gente pasmó;
y él que sopla la candela
la cara se le quemó,

Y él que toca la guitarra
muerto en el suelo cayó.
le hechara en sus ric.ose brazos,
y a sus palacios lo llevó.
