Research in Folk and Popular Music:
Mexico and Guatemala, 1942-46. Now housed in the Library of Congress, this pioneer recorded collection includes more than 2,000 items from 14 different Indian tribes and folk communities.

Spain and Morocco, 1953-56. Recordings made in Western and Central provinces of Spain, the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Menorca), Tangier and Tetuan, Morocco among the Sephardic Jews.

Return to Mexico, 1964-66, 1971-72, 1981, 1992-present.

Purepecha Indians. Begun in 1942, research was resumed in the 1960s. Collection consists of about 500 items. Recorded many mestizo songs and instrumental pieces.

Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Begun in 1942 and 1945, research was resumed in 1971-72 and 1992 among Zapotec Indians

Yucatan. Ritual music in the community of Yaxcaba.

Puerto Rico. 1967, 1969. Recorded traditional music in mountain communities and in Loiza Aldea, one of coastal Puerto Rico's black towns.

John's Island, South Carolina, 1970-71. Recorded traditional music-children's game songs, gospel music in church and at home, prayers, preaching and testimonials, and blues.

Ireland, 1973-74. Ten hours of traditional music-ballads, dance music on such instruments as the fiddle, tin whistle, bagpipes, concertina.

Galicia, Spain, 1990. Preliminary study of women's songs. Recordings, video.

Colombia and Ecuador, 1975-76, Recordings of music of black coastal communities of Colombia. Children's music in Ecuador.
